Sisters Nicole and Michelle Rivard grew up in Golden Valley, attending Catholic church and schools from kindergarten all through high school. They cherish time with their family and love being aunts to all their little nieces and nephews. Their home in Champlin has become a gathering place for their extended family.
They believe they are very unique members of Advent. “We still consider ourselves Catholic, but we attend and are members of a Lutheran church.” Michelle still attends a Catholic school, as she is finishing her Ed.D. in Leadership at St. Mary’s University.
The sisters were unhappy with the direction the Catholic church was going and quite frustrated with certain doctrine. They quit attending church for around eight years, but they felt a void in their lives.
Michelle and Nicole’s older sister had attended Advent many years earlier, and they hesitantly decided to visit in 2021. Having only attended Catholic churches, Nicole and Michelle weren’t sure they would be welcomed. Pastor Elizabeth noticed them right away and made them feel comfortable; she reassured them that they were welcome to take communion. They felt a connection right away to Advent, thanks to the friendly people who engaged them in conversation. They were particularly struck by the church's inclusive and comfortable nature, as well as its relaxed atmosphere and the wonderful fellowship time following the services. Nicole shared, “It helps you feel part of the church and that has meant a lot to me.”
As liberal women, they find it refreshing to see a woman lead the church. The sermons encourage them, and they really enjoyed the sermon series on the book of Revelation. They appreciate the Gifts of Love that Advent highlights each quarter and its focus on supporting immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, and the CROSS food shelf.
Michelle and Nicole often watch the services online and are thankful for that option if they are unable to attend in person. It helps them stay connected to church.
