Director of Music
Advent Lutheran Church

Job Title: Director of Music

Position Type: 30 hours per week to include Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and special occasions as needed. This is a benefited position.

Salary: To be negotiated based upon experience

Job Description: The Director of Music will be responsible for fostering healthy and growing relationships with God and others through directing, developing and encouraging music whether in person or virtual/online. They will work closely with the Senior Pastor and other staff to create worship that will be inspiring, vibrant and meaningful to our community. The Director should be an experienced musician and leader who is a Christian and demonstrates an active faith life.

Working relationships:

  • Reports directly to the Senior Pastor
  • Works collaboratively with other staff and the congregation of other areas of music ministry.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate the music program for Advent Lutheran by providing leadership and resources to the musicians and staff
  • Participate in the planning of worship and other musical activities in the congregation
  • Select hymns and music that will align to the liturgical style and key messages to create a meaningful worship experience for members and visitors
  • Schedule music groups and individual performances for participation in worship
  • Create slide deck for worship
  • Schedule and hold weekly rehearsal for musical groups
  • Oversees and manages the church music library
  • Maintain and obtain all copyrights needed for music used at Advent Lutheran
  • Attends staff meetings, occasional staff trainings and retreats
  • Ensure maintenance of all instruments of the congregation
  • Determine and submit the annual budget requirement for the music program and oversee the expenditures of the approved budget
  • Meet with the Senior Pastor for regular supervisory check-ins
  • Actively recruits people to participate in the musically life of the community
  • Provide music for funerals, weddings and other special occasions as needed

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Lutheran theology, liturgical practice and use of music in worship
  • Desired competency in planning and conducting larger scale musical events.
  • Must be able to work well with others and professionally with staff and congregational members
  • High organizational and communication skills
  • Able to direct and supervise others
  • Proficiency with keyboard/piano
  • Music degree preferred

What does a typical Sunday morning look like?

We offer a midweek service on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Viewers are invited to enjoy it as a livestream at that time, or as a recording as it fits their schedule. We strongly encourage families to watch and participate in worship together and have conversations about the Bible lesson, hymns, or sermon as they go about their day.  

Families with children in preschool up to fifth grade are invited to join our Zoom gatherings for Sunday school and musical instruction on alternating weeks. Please contact the church office at 763-425-4243 to be connected to these resources.

Are there other services I can take part in? 

We offer a midweek service on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. This service features acoustic music and Holy Communion is served each week. It can be found under the Worship page. Viewers are invited to enjoy it as a livestream or as a recording fits their schedule. 

I'm not Lutheran. Can I still attend?

Yes!  All are welcome, including but not limited to:

-people who are lifelong Lutherans (or Presbyterians, Methodists, Catholics, Baptists, Episcopalians, etc.)
-people who haven't been to church since their confirmation
-people who have never been to church
-people who are questioning their faith
-people who have this Jesus thing figured out
-people looking for a safe place
-people looking to be welcomed
-people who are married, divorced, straight, gay, old, young, happy, sad, angry, scared, and/or [insert adjective here]

Can I take communion? What about my child?

We believe all who are baptized and desire to take communion are welcome to do so! If you have not been baptized, or if your child is younger than fifth grade, we ask that you please speak with the pastor prior to communing for the first time with us.

A/V Technician Job Description
Advent Lutheran Church

Job Title: Audio and Video Systems Administrator

Position Status: Part-time, 15 to 20 hours per week. Must be at Sunday, Wednesday, and Holiday services and other special occasions. Reports to Senior Pastor.

Job Description: The Audio Visual Technician runs the A/V system for Advent worship services and other events. The person in this position provides technical expertise and team leadership for Advent’s video and sound.  This includes recording and live streaming worship and uploading videos to the Advent web site and designing digital graphics/slides as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Planning and production for events at Advent, both congregational and outside group functions, requiring A/V support, including streaming when requested
  • Helps recruit, train, supervise and schedule volunteer A/V technicians
  • Must be able to work well with others and professionally with staff and congregational members
  • Works with A/V vendors to ensure all repairs and recommends purchases to meet Advent’s requirements
  • Set up and maintain platform: operate soundboard and video equipment or schedule trained volunteer operators, make powerpoints, slides, and/or videos for presentations
  • Upload, render, and edit videos to platform

Minimum Responsibilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of audio mixing consoles, monitors, speakers, microphones, amplifiers, audio recording/playback devices (analog and digital), audio distribution systems and public address systems.
  • Skilled in creating and mixing sound quality in a sanctuary venue.
  • Advanced knowledge of television receivers and monitors, cameras, video recording devices, and video distribution systems
  • Advanced knowledge of streaming, and maintaining streaming service

Other Considerations:

  • Be familiar and  coordinate with staff using the following systems:
    • PowerPoint
    • BoxCast
    • Church on Line
    • Vimeo
    • Sign Up Genius
    • Drop Box
  • Monitor and renew all licenses of above and any others of an A/V nature
  • Be aware of emerging technology and trends so that Advent can adapt and change as needed
  • Multiple cameras used in recording
  • Attend  staff meetings
