Advent's Youth Ministry

"Train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it".

-Proverbs 22:6-

Advent strives to "train up" our children and youth. Our lessons focus on teaching the Gospel message and making each child feel a part of God's family. Developing Faith for a lifetime of love and service to Jesus is our goal. We nurture and provide support in all ways. We strive to make Advent a place where children feel welcome and loved. There are many opportunities for families to be involved and we offer support for parents and children in growing spiritually.

christian education

Advent Lutheran Church encourages families to worship together!  There is a staffed nursery, as well. Children age 3 and under are invited to come to the nursery while parents attend worship. Find us in the Fireside Room!

Advent offers church school classes on Sunday morning and on Wednesday evening. Church school is available for children age 3 through 5th grade. The focus is on teaching the Gospel message and making each child feel a part of God's family. Sunday classes are at 10 & 11 AM. The curriculum teaches the same lessons that are used in worship. A take-home sheet with ideas for living out the lesson throughout the week is also given to parents.

See Rachel Arends, Director of Confirmation, Children's, and Family Ministries for more information.

confirmation

Confirmation is offered for youth in grades 6-9 with the Affirmation of Baptism service being held in the fall of 10th grade. Youth in grades 6-8 attend classes on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm. All grades meet together for opening worship and a presentation, followed by discussion in small groups. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the opeing worship time. 9th grade students choose from a variety of options, such as mission trips, BWCA, camp or cell groups. 9th gradeers also participate in a 6-week mentoring program during Lent. Attending worship and serving both the church and the community are important aspects of Confirmation. An annual retreat for all students is also an important part of this ministry. Involvement and support of parents is also critical to the Confirmation experience.

Milestone ministry

Children of Advent are recognized throughout their childhood growing years by Milestone Ministries. At Baptism, families are given a Cradle Packet to encourage faith bilding in their homes. They are recognized a year later when given a Baptism Medallion to honor their Baptism. 3 year olds are invited for a breakfast and orientation to introduce them to the church school program. 4 year olds are invited to share in a breakfast where they learn about prayer and receive a prayer book during Sunday morning services. Kindergarten age children come once again and share a time of fellowship and learning. 5th graders receive instruction of First Communion at a retreat and they help with Maundy Thursday services. In addition, there are several opportunities for retreats throughout Junior High. Children are confirmed in 10th grade. But, let's not stop there! Keep growing in faith!

Youth ministry

Youth mission statement: As beloved children of God, we are living to reflect God's grace so others may know and accept God's grace. We are committed to: being Christ-centered, inviting and welcoming, sharing our faith and gifts, and holding each other accountable.

We offer opportunities for youth to feel welcome through ministries such as Cell Groups, camp-outs, "girls only" slumber parties, snow footbal, S'Mores, worship by campfire, basketball/softball teams, dinner theaters, involvement in worship services, weekend retreats, 30-hour famine participation, scavenger hunts, and more.
